The selection of a Loran Scholar is unique in its attention to a young person’s character. They believe that integrity, courage, grit and personal autonomy are better indicators of overall potential than standard academic measures.

To discover these traits, they made it possible to administer the most comprehensive and thorough scholarship selection process in Canada.

Tenable at 25 partner universities, the Loran Award is valued at $100,000 over four years, including mentorship, funding for summer internships and participation in an extensive network of past and present scholars.

This year, they are offering up to 36 Loran Awards. In addition, they also are granting up to 118 finalist and provincial & territorial awards ($5,000 or $2,000 each, respectively) to promising candidates.

In 2020/21, they conducted 1,704 virtual interviews with students from across the country and invited 72 finalists to participate in national interviews.

Students describe the process as an opportunity to reflect on their motivations and to imagine the lives they want to live.

Whether or not they are selected for an award, many students come away from interviews with new connections, friendships and ideas.

Note:

FAQs about Loran Scholarship

How is the minimum average calculated?

The 85% minimum average calculation for high school students includes the most recent three years of final grades on the student’s transcript. Cegep students must have a minimum R score of 29.

If the official transcript in your province only shows the last two years of final grades, that transcript will be sufficient to apply

I am currently a student at a university or college. Can I still apply for your award?

No. Current post-secondary students (with the exception of students attending Cegep) are not eligible for our awards

I am a student applying from outside of Canada. Can I apply?

Yes, but only if you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident

I am hesitant to move away from home for university. Should I still apply?

Independence is an important character trait possessed by Loran Scholars. As a way to develop this and to broaden their perspectives, Loran Scholars have been expected to study outside of their home region. Many have learned and grown a great deal from that experience, however we appreciate that there are other ways to develop independence.

We are here to support scholars in choosing a path that will help them forge independence and gain new perspectives; university choice is only one element of that. Our staff work with each scholar to make the decision that is best for them

I am interested in attending a university that is not on your list of participating universities. Am I still eligible for your awards?

Loran Awards are only tenable at participating universities in Canada, but finalist and provincial awards are tenable at any accredited public university in Canada

I am interested in attending a private university. Am I eligible for this award?

None of our awards are tenable at private institutions
